Tool · Recovery Timeline

Week-by-week,
what recovery actually looks like.

The realistic recovery timeline for body contouring after major weight loss — drains, compression, return to work, return to exercise. Sourced from peer-reviewed surgical literature and ASPS clinical guidance.

How long is recovery from body contouring after weight loss?

Tummy tuck: desk work at 2-3 weeks, light activity at 4-6 weeks, full exercise at 8-12 weeks. Lower body lift: desk work at 4-6 weeks, light activity at 6-8 weeks, full exercise at 12-16 weeks. Arm + thigh lift: 2-3 weeks to desk work, 8-12 weeks to full exercise. Recovery is longer than for cosmetic-only procedures because the skin envelope is larger.

The interactive timeline (input procedures + return-to-work job type → personalized week-by-week milestones with calendar export) is the next build. Below are the ASPS-aligned baseline timelines for each major procedure family.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Week 0–1
Drains in place. Compression garment 24/7. Walking encouraged. Sleeping in a recliner or upright. No driving while on opioid pain meds.
Week 2–3
Drains typically removed (1-2 weeks). Return to desk work. Can resume light driving. Showering OK. Compression continues.
Week 4–6
Light activity resumes. Compression garment continues 12+ hours/day. Suture sites continue to mature.
Week 8–12
Full exercise cleared by surgeon. Scar maturation phase begins. Compression typically discontinued at 8 weeks.
Month 6–12
Final aesthetic result emerges. Scar continues to fade. Revision discussion if indicated typically at month 12.

Lower Body Lift

Week 0–1
Drains in place (multiple — abdomen, hips, lower back). Compression garment 24/7. Limited mobility. Help with daily activities required.
Week 2–4
Drains typically removed (2-3 weeks). Return to desk work at week 4-6. Walking expanding gradually. Compression continues.
Week 6–8
Light activity resumes. Driving cleared. Lateral incision junction (the "T") most prone to delayed healing — wound check critical.
Week 12–16
Full exercise cleared. Compression typically discontinued at 8-12 weeks. Final swelling resolves.
Month 6–18
Final aesthetic result. Scar maturation continues for 18 months. Revision typically at month 12-18 if indicated.

Arm + Thigh Lift (combined or staged)

Week 0–1
Compression sleeves on arms; compression shorts on thighs. Limited shoulder + hip range of motion. No lifting. Sleep with arms supported.
Week 2–3
Drains removed (most patients). Return to desk work. Light driving cleared. Inner thigh swelling persists.
Week 4–6
Light activity. No upper-body strength training. Inner-thigh sutures most prone to wound separation; limit hip abduction.
Week 8–12
Full exercise cleared. Scar care protocol begins (silicone sheets at 4-6 weeks once incisions sealed).
Month 6–24
Scar maturation phase — inner-arm and groin scars take 12-24 months to fully fade from red to white. Revision rare but typically at 12-18 months.

Frequently asked

Desk work: 2-3 weeks for tummy tuck, 4-6 weeks for lower body lift, 2-3 weeks for arm or thigh lift alone (3-4 weeks combined). Physically demanding work (lifting, prolonged standing): 6-8 weeks for any procedure, longer for combined operations. Your surgeon will clear you based on incision healing and drain status, not the calendar alone.
Walking starts day 1. Light cardio (stationary bike, elliptical) at 4 weeks. Resistance training and high-impact cardio cleared at 8-12 weeks depending on procedure. Lower body lift recovery is the longest because of the circumferential incision. Always wait for surgeon clearance — premature exercise increases scar widening, seroma risk, and wound separation risk.
Tummy tuck: 6-8 weeks (24/7 first 4 weeks, then 12+ hours daily). Lower body lift: 8-12 weeks. Arm + thigh lift: 6-8 weeks. The garment reduces swelling, supports the surgical site, and helps the skin "redrape" against the underlying tissue. Skipping or shortening compression increases seroma risk and worsens the final aesthetic.
Once you are off opioid pain medication AND can perform an emergency stop without holding the steering wheel for stability — typically 2-3 weeks for tummy tuck or arm/thigh lift, 3-4 weeks for lower body lift. Most surgeons explicitly clear driving at the post-op visit; do not assume.
Post-massive-weight-loss recovery is materially longer than recovery from cosmetic-only procedures because the skin envelope is larger, the muscle-wall separation is often greater, and the surgical plan typically includes more extensive tissue movement. The "10-day recovery" you see in marketing is for cosmetic abdominoplasty in never-overweight patients — not the same procedure.
Choose your surgeon carefully

Recovery is real. Pick a surgeon who explains it honestly.

Recovery time and what it requires of you (and your support system) is part of the consult. A surgeon who minimizes recovery to win the booking is a red flag.
